The good people of Antwerp are looking forward to a stunning fireworks display to ring in the new on New Year’s Eve. Expect a 15-minute show created by the renowned fireworks artist Cliff Hooge. The fireworks display will be accompanied by an impressive soundtrack.
Just like last year fireworks and rockets are being fired from pontons in the River Schelde (Scheldt).
Unfortunately, due to works, the display won’t be visible from the Steenplein, a traditional vantage point for fireworks displays familiar to generations of Antwerpians.
The best places to see this year’s display will be the Schelde Quays i.e. the St Michael’s and Cockerill Quays at Zuid or the Left Bank. The city authorities are encouraging people to travel to the event on foot, by bike or public transport. Drivers will be guided to the right location by stewards and signposts.
If you can't make it to the metropolis, the fireworks display is also being broadcast live on VRT1 television.
A word of warning: lighting your own fireworks in Antwerp is not allowed and could land you with a hefty fine. Till 31 January carrying unwrapped fireworks around in the city too is banned.
