The City of Brussels has decided to extend many of the activities linked to Winter Wonders until 7 January. Winter Wonders is a great Christmas event in Brussels and includes a Christmas market in the downtown as well attractions on Brussels’ historic market square, the Grand Place, and an après-ski village on the Muntplein.
This means you will be able to visit the après-ski village on the Muntplein, enjoy light shows on the Grand Place and even go ice-skating and curling at De Brouckère.
The 23rd edition of Winter Wonders was launched in early November and included numerous events and installations: the Ferris wheel on the Vismarkt, a skating rink on the De Brouckèreplein, wooden chalets serving mulled wine and raclette as well as merry-go-rounds. This year, many new attractions were added including a light show organised by Quebec's 11 first nations.
With Christmas behind us Winter Wonders seemed to be drawing to a close, but in a press release this week, the City of Brussels announced that the festivities at De Brouckère, on the Muntplein and the Grand Place will be extended until 7 January. "It seemed important to us that families staying in Brussels during the Christmas holidays could continue to enjoy the magic of the holidays and Winter Wonders," Mayor Philippe Close (Francophone socialist/PS) announced.
So for another week, you will be able to visit the après-ski village and go skating or curling on the De Brouckère Square, if that is your cup of tea. To close the event in style, from 6pm to 10pm on Saturday 6 January a Disco on Ice Night is being organised on the ice rink . The light and sound show will remain on the Grand Place until that date too, where there’s also the Christmas tree and a Nativity scene. The Christmas market only remains open until 31 December.
