Six people, who appear to have been trapped in a freight container for almost a week, were freed from their confinement in a freight container in Port Waasland last night. The six were allegedly involved in drug transports through the port.
Six “rescued” from container in Port Waasland after six days: was this a Trojan operation?
Port Waasland is an extension of the port of Antwerp on the left bank of the River Schelde (Scheldt).
Despite their lengthy confinement a medical examination showed that all six were still in good health. What exactly the six were doing in the container is not yet clear, although all indications are that they were involved in a drug transport through the port. Drug smugglers often let themselves be locked up in a so called "Trojan" container in order to sneak into the port. In June this year, 12 Dutch "extractors" were arrested.
What is a Trojan container?
Trojan containers are containers that are driven into the port "empty". In reality, they are primitive hotel rooms with a mattress and sometimes also a chemical toilet. Drug dealers get into the containers and are driven into the terminal unnoticed. There they stay on board for up to 3 nights until their target container of drugs arrives. Then the extractors come out of their container to remove the drugs.
