It’s been a Christmas like no other for a priest from Dessel in Anwerp Province. After midnight mass the cleric’s car ended up in a canal with the priest still inside the vehicle. Fortunately, he was soon rescued and is now being treated for hypothermia.
The priest from Dessel has performed Christmas midnight mass on many occasions during his long life, but this year’s Christmas Eve is one he will not easily forget. The priest, who is approaching ninety years of age, was involved in a road traffic accident in Geel (Antwerp Province) on his way home from church after midnight mass. His car with the cleric still inside it ended up in the Bocholt-Herentals Canal.
As if by miracle, a passer-by witnessed the entire unfortunate incident and was able to alert the emergency services. The priest was rescued from the canal and was only suffering slight hypothermia. Still, he was rushed to hospital, just to be on the safe side.
The cause of the accident following the mass has not been divulged.
