Although the Christmas holidays in Belgium do not officially start until Saturday (23 December), Friday is an exceptionally busy day indeed at Belgium’s largest airport at Zaventem in Flemish Brabant. Around 60,000 passengers are expected by this evening and this is far more than on a "normal" weekday. The Belgian airline Brussels Airlines alone has sold almost 300,000 flight tickets for the forthcoming holiday period.
Christmas holidays: Busy times at Zaventem Airport and for Brussels Airlines
As many as 850,000 passengers are expected to depart from or arrive at Zaventem during the next two weeks. That is more passengers than there were during the Christmas holidays last year. New destinations have been launched from the airport this year, including Amman in Jordan (with Royal Jordanian) and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia (with Flynas). A total of 135 destinations are served from Zaventem.
Brussels Airlines
The Belgian airline Brussels Airlines alone has sold almost 300,000 tickets for the Christmas holidays. Around 228,000 of these tickets are for short and medium-haul flights within Europe.
Popular destinations for Brussels Airlines during the Christmas holidays are Rome, Malaga, Barcelona and Vienna. Just under 68,000 flight bookings were made for the airline’s long-haul flights, with New York being the most popular destination.
