The incident happened on a Saturday evening in August.  The pickpocket threw the bottle on a metro bound for the King Boudewijn Stadium, where a concert was about to start.  People on the metro first thought the bottle only contained a soft drink, but then smelled urine and later something even more intense. People couldn’t breathe and experienced itchy eyes.  They soon realised they needed to get out of the carriage because the bottle contained ammonia.

Two people were rushed to hospital.  The defendant, who has now been jailed, was convicted on charges of attempted violent theft, grievous bodily harm leading to incapacity to work and carrying a substance intended to threaten or inflict bodily harm.
