Ghent University, UGent, has released pictures of what a revamped Ardoyen campus might look like. Ghent University expects the campus to house some 13,000 students and 3,600 staff by 2050. Under plans meeting places and greenery are priorities. Car traffic will be kept to a minimum.
Ghent University unveils plans for new-look campus for 13,000 students
The renovated Ardoyen campus is part of the "UGent Imagines 2050" plan that groups all Ugent campuses into three clusters: a cluster in the centre of Ghent, one around the Sterre and the university hospital UZ and a cluster in the south of Ghent at the Zwijnaarde Technology Park.
This latter Ardoyen campus will accommodate three faculties, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, the Faculty of Bioengineering and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration
Future tram line to Ghent city centre?
Together with the city authorities and the not-for-profit association Ardoyen, the university has now had plans drawn up. They already give some idea of what the campus might look like. There will be several meeting places and green areas and when it comes to construction the efficiency of the way buildings are constructed will be looked at.
Campus mobility too gets a lot of attention. There will be several cycling routes, both for fast and slow cyclists, and the campus will also be accessible by bus. Car traffic will be kept to a minimum. UGent also has the ambition of connecting the campus with the city centre via a tram line, but that dream is still in the distant future.
