Group leaders in the Federal Parliament ask State Security Service to investigate Vlaams Belang MP Steven Creyelman

The group leaders in the Chamber of Representative have asked the State Security Service to carry out an investigation into the activities of Steven Creyelman, a federal MP for the far-right party Vlaams Belang. Steven Creyelman is the brother of Frank Creyelman, who was expelled from the party a few days ago over allegations of spying for China. Steven Creyelman is also chairman of the Federal Parliament's Army Procurement Committee.

Last week the Financial Times, Le Monde and Der Spiegel revealed that former Vlaams Belang MP Frank Creyelman had been used as an informant by Chinese espionage agencies for several years. The party expelled Frank Creyelman who is currently a city councilor in Mechelen (Antwerp Province).

However, Mr Creyelman’s brother Steven also features in the press articles published. For instance, Le Monde refers to a parliamentary question tabled by Steven Creyelman about "politically inspired violence against the Chinese government" by activists in Hong Kong. Several parties in the Federal Parliament also point to Steven Creyelman's position as chairman of the Army Procurement Committee putting him in a position to gain access to sensitive information.

The leader of Vlaams Belang Tom Van Grieken has previously said that he has every confidence in Steven Creyelman and that he cannot be held responsible for his brother's actions.
