40% of Belgians find it hard to make ends meet

According to figures released by the Federal Bureau of Statistic Statbel 40% of people in Belgium are finding it hard making ends meet. Every three months Statbel carries out a prosperity survey among people from across Belgium.

Published:

In the third quarter of this years (1 July to 30 September) 40.3% of those surveyed said that they were finding it difficult to make ends meet. This is considerably more than was the case two years ago when 36% of respondents said that they were having problems managing on their income.

However, it is well down on the third quarter of last year when spiraling energy prices were making it ever more difficult for those on lower and average incomes to manage. Then 47% of respondents said that they were finding it difficult to make ends meet.

The situation then improved before stabalising during the second and third quarters of this year.

Regional differences

There are big regional differences. In Flanders 34% of respondents said that they were having trouble making ends meet, while almost 49% of respondents in Brussels and Wallonia said that this was the case.
