Signal box fire triggers days of rail disruption between Antwerp and Mechelen

Rail traffic will continue to be disrupted between Mechelen and Antwerp during the next few days. During this morning’s rush hour trains were diverted or delayed due to a signal box fire resulting in chaos for commuters on the important Antwerp Brussels line. Due to the fire in a signal box yesterday on the line between Duffel and Kontich only two out of the four tracks can be used.

The fire caused by a short circuit broke out yesterday shortly before 11pm. Rail track operator Infrabel is investigating the cause.

For the time being, two of the four hourly IC trains will run between Antwerp and Brussels, says rail operator NMBS. The IC service from Turnhout to Brussels is not running beyond Antwerpen-Berchem: passengers from Turnhout, Herentals and Lier need to take a train to Antwerpen-Berchem and change for Brussels. A number of commuter services from the Kempen District towards Brussels have also been cancelled.

If you need to take the train on this route in the coming days, check the NMBS route planner.
