Flemish local transport company De Lijn is looking at the possibility of running a night bus from Brussels’ city centre via Rogier to Brussels Airport. Rail company NMBS is considering earlier rail services.
New night bus to Brussels Airport and earlier train services too?
The new service is intended for passengers on early fights as well as airport workers on early shifts. The request comes from the Brussels Airport Company.
The Belgian rail company NMBS is considering a similar request. The rail company is looking at the possibility of running early trains from next summer
Application made for new environment permit
The plans came to light in connection with a new environmental permit application. As a result of the application a public enquiry has been launched and is ongoing until 8 January. Objections or comments can be submitted to the municipalities of Kortenberg, Machelen, Steenokkerzeel or Zaventem (Flemish Brabant).
The plans also include more bike paths, bike parking, lockers and showers, which should encourage passengers and staff to opt more readily for their bike instead of their car.
A feasibility study into the possibility of a high-speed train stopping at the airport's train station is also under way. A possible abolition of the Diabolo tax - which train passengers to the airport have to pay - is also discussed in the application.
Environmentalists of Bond Beter Leefmilieu and residents' groups have already announced their intention to draw up an extensive letter of objection against what they consider the "completely irresponsible plans" of Brussels Airport Company.
