New park and ride scheme to open at the Heizel in Brussels

The Brussels Capital Regional authority has announced that a new park and ride facility will open on the Heizel Plateau on the northern edge of Brussels on 8 January 2024. The new facility will enable commuters entering Brussels from the north to leave their cars in a secure carpark and continue their journey on public transport. The new park and ride will be the 9th of its kind in the capital. Around 100 spaces will be available.

Currently the only park and ride facility available in the north of Brussels is at the UZ Brussel hospital in Jette. The new park and ride at the Heizel is close to both the metro and tram routes into town and is also served by numerous bus routes. The park and ride will use some of the parking capacity that is available at Brussels Expo.

The Brussels Transport Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Flemish green) told journalists that "We want to make Brussels become a more pleasant city for residents and visitors by reducing traffic jams and transit traffic”.

Conditions

In order to use one of Brussels Mobility’s park and ride car parks free of charge you have to be a commuter, have a season ticket for the Brussels public transport company MIVB and work at least 2km from where the carpark is located. Anyone meeting these criteria will be allowed to use the new park and ride carpark free of charge between 6am and 10pm on weekdays. The carpark is easily accessible from junction 8, the Wemmel turnoff on the Brussels Orbital Motorway. Initially 100 space will be available, but this could increase if there is sufficient demand.
