Fast-charging stations to accept card payment from April (VIDEO)

From April next year, you will be able to use a bank card at any (fast) charging station to charge your electric car. Belgium is following European legislation by making this option obligatory. Today, most public charging stations use their own apps and charging cards.

If you want to charge an electric car at a (fast) charging station, you need a specific app or charging pass for that charging station. As a result, drivers of electric cars sometimes need several charging cards and apps, and the price between those different apps and cards can differ.

This will now change. By 3 April, all fast-charging posts with a capacity of at least 50 kW will have to accept bank cards. In Belgium, there are already some charging stations where you can pay with your bank card, but often at a higher price than when using a charging card or app.

The new option is a result of the European "alternative fuels infrastructure" regulation. That European legislation obliges member states to provide sufficient charging infrastructure for electric cars. For example, drivers of electric cars must be given clear information on prices at charging stations.  For passenger cars by 2025 there must be a charging station on motorways every 60 kilometres.
