The altarpiece is an extremely rare specimen and a top-quality work ordered by the monks of the abbey for the abbey church during the 16th century. It was made here and paid for using the profits the monks made from selling their honey. The return of the altarpiece forms part of a project entitled “Bringing Flemish Masters home” that has the aim of displaying works of art at the location where they were made, if this is possible. Special care will now be taken to display the altarpiece at its new home in Averbode.
The altarpiece is already a hit with the monks of Averbode and it’s hoped that it will bring in even more visitors to the abbey given the popularity of daytrips at home since the pandemic.
