The local and federal police services are staging another “speed trap marathon” operation today (Tuesday 21 November). The aim is to discourage motorists from speeding. Those that do break the speed limit will of course be fined accordingly. The “speed trap marathon” got under way at 6am and will run until 6am tomorrow.
Since 6am on Tuesday morning teams of police offices are checking the speed of motorists on motorways, trunk roads and secondary routes. In the first instance the operation that involves both officers from the various local police services and the Federal Police aims to dissuade people from speeding.
This is the 19th time that a so-called “speed trap marathon” has been staged. In a statement the police services say that “Many drivers still minimise the dangers associated with excessive speed. During the October 2022 speed trap marathon, more than 4% of the motorists checked were exceeding the permitted speed limit."
Then speed checks were carried out at 556 locations across Belgium. The Federal Highways Police and 130 local police services took part.
"Road safety is high on the priority list of the police services. Excessive speed together with driving under the influence and mobile phone use behind the wheel is one of the main causes of road accidents. The consequences of a traffic accident are worse the greater the speed"
