The road safety institute Vias has released figures that show that since the introduction of a SPECS speed camera system on the E40 motorway between Sterrebeek and Bertem (both Flemish Brabant) the number of accidents resulting in injury or death has fallen by more than half. A 55% fall in accidents that result in at least one person being injured or killed has been recorded on the section of motorway that is one of the busiest in the country.

SPECS halves number of serious accidents on E40 motorway between Sterrebeek and Bertem
Published:
In the 4 years prior to the introduction of a SPECS speed camera system on the motorway there was an average of 32 accidents resulting in injury or death per annum. Since the system came into use on the section of motorway that is located between Brussels and Leuven, the average number of accidents resulting in injury or death has fallen to 15 per annum.
Vias says that the figures from the E40 once again confirm the positive impact of SPECS on road safety. Vias adds that “If motorists stuck to the speed limit everywhere there would be 140 fewer deaths and 550 fewer serious injuries on our road every year”.
