A woman who had fallen off the platform and onto the tracks at Geel railway station this morning was run over by an approaching train but miraculously she was only slightly injured as she had landed between the rails.
"The woman slipped on the platform, falling onto the tracks," Thomas Baeken of railtrack operator Infrabel explains. It happened, just at the moment, the Mol service pulled into the station with 80 passengers on board. The train driver was unable to stop and ran over the woman, but she sustained only minor injuries. "The woman had fallen in such a way that she was lying between the two rails when the train ran over her," says Thomas Baeken.
Due to the incident, train traffic was at a standstill for about half an hour. The train driver involved in the incident was in a state of shock and had to go home. The unfortunate woman was taken to hospital slightly injured. "This could have ended far more tragically, but fortunately this was not the case," Thomas Baeken added. Depending on the type of train, underneath the train there is sometimes enough space between the ground and the underside of the train to drive over an obstacle including a body, provided, of course, you lie exactly between the rails.
