Investigation into care home death after handicapped man drowns in bath

West Flemish prosecutors have opened an investigation into the death of a 25-year-old handicapped man, Robin, who drowned in a bath at a care home.  The man’s parents have filed a complaint with the judicial authorities alleging involuntary manslaughter.

“Robin used to take a bath every morning” explains the parents' lawyer.  “One day at 4PM the police were at their door to inform them that their son had drowned”.

The incident has raised many questions.  Robin was seriously handicapped and completely dependent.

The Kortrijk care home De Branding speaks of a "tragic accident" and is backing a judicial enquiry.  A care home manager concedes something went wrong but isn’t admitting somebody made a mistake.

Robin’s family is aware of a string of incidents in 2021 and 2222.  Robin’s sister also stayed at the care home and suffered a fracture.

West Flemish prosecutors have opened an investigation.  A police doctor and a technical expert have been appointed to examine the case. The initial results of the investigation led to the appointment of an examining magistrate to head the case and investigate possible charges of involuntary manslaughter.
