Police are still trying to track down a gunman held responsible for a murderous shooting in Sint-Lievens-Houtem (East Flanders) on Saturday. The gunman shot dead a lawyer outside her office. The woman’s son was injured. The motive for the killing remains unclear. Possibly, there is a link to one of the cases the lawyer was dealing with. Police have issued an identikit photo of the suspect.
It was shortly after lunchtime on Saturday that the fatal shooting occurred. The lawyer’s son, who was injured, was rushed to hospital. On Sunday police deployed a helicopter to help in the search, but in vain.
The suspect is aged in his early 60s and stands 1m80 tall. He is of normal build and balding with short grey hair and speaks Dutch or one of its Flemish dialects.
Sightings should be reported to the police via opsporingen@police.belgium.eu or the toll-free number 0800 30 300. Confidentiality is guaranteed.
An examining magistrate is heading the investigation. The lawyer’s office has been sealed. Prosecutors say that all avenues of investigation are being examined and warn the gunman could still be armed.
