An office block on the Amerikalei in downtown Antwerp was the scene of an explosion last night. The explosion shattered one window and damaged the building’s entrance. Nobody was injured. A message was daubed on the building’s front. Police are investigating the attack.
It was shortly after midnight that the office block was attacked. “Several people heard the explosion and ventured out of doors” says Wouter Bryns of Antwerp police. “Police attended the scene and searched the entire area but encountered no suspects. Police cordoned off the area that was examined by the army bomb squad. “It’s unclear whether the attack is linked to drug-trafficking in the city” said Bryns.
Several lawyers have their offices in the building but are not thought to have been targeted. The manager of a business on the ground floor has been the subject of threats and extortion for several months now.
The name of the Turkish businessman, who runs an insurance company in the building, was daubed on the front.
