The narcotics were found in a container at the port’s Quay 1333. The drugs have since been taken to a secure location, the Public Prosecutor's Office reports. The Federal Judicial Police (FJP) has started an investigation into how the drugs came to be at port.
The exact amount of drugs seized has not yet been disclosed. However, it is said to be several tonnes. Last week, two large consignments of cocaine were also seized at the port. After one of these seizures, there was an incident in which seven armed men made a foiled attempt to recover the drugs from customs. Antwerp police were able to arrest the men and the process of destroying the drugs is now underway.
