In an interview with VRT News the Federal Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Flemish liberal) has said that there is no indication that the man that carried out Monday evening’s attack in Brussels was part of a wider terrorist network.
PM says that as things stand it appears that the Brussels attacker acted alone
Mr De Croo told VRT News that “So far we see no indication he this was part of a network. Now all indications are that that man acted completely alone."
The Federal Prime Minister pointed out that the attacker is known the police, but not in connection with violent extremism. "We must examine whether we assessed things correctly. The man actively went out to seek Swedes in Brussels and then perpetrated a cowedly and crazy act. In recent years we have seen across Europe that sadly no one is immune from this kind of lone wolf acts”.
When asked why the attacker was still in Belgium despite him having been ordered to leave the country after his asylum request was denied, Mr De Croo said that it will be up to this afternoon’s meeting of the National Security Council to find an answer to this.
He added that the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will come to Brussels on Wednesday to visit the scene of the attack and pay his respects. The visit will also provide an opportunity for the Swedish and Belgian PMs to “exchange information”. The attacker had also spent time in Sweden.
