A 71-year-old man has been arrested after he poured petrol into the entrance hall and corridor of a block of flats in the seaside resort of Koksijde. Emergency services were able to stop the man before he could start a fire. The West Flemish public prosecutor's office say he is currently detained in prison on suspicion of attempted arson.
Man arrested for attempted arson after he poured petrol in entrance hall of block of flats
On Saturday evening, an eye witness called the emergency services after he saw a man pouring petrol in the communal corridor and hall of an apartment building in Koksijde-on-Sea. Police and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and were able to stop the man before he started a fire. The police took him away for questioning.
"The investigation is still in its early stages," says Fien Maddens of the West Flemish public prosecutor's office. "We cannot say much about it. We can confirm that the man born in 1952 was arrested on suspicion of attempted arson. The investigation should clarify his motives. After questioning, a decision will be taken on whether the man will appear before an investigating judge."
Detectives of the West Coast Police Zone will investigate the incident further.
