Last year criminals stole 40 million euros by convincing members of the public to divulge personal information to fraudulent websites. These duped individuals were the victims of phishing. In recent years fraudsters have been producing ever more convincing fraudulent websites. To combat the threat a new application can now be downloaded from the government’s safeonweb.be website. Install the application on your computer and a colour code will be displayed every time you visit a website. Green websites can be trusted. Here you can share personal and financial data. Red websites are not to be trusted, while if a website is coded amber the government possesses no information to say whether it can be trusted or not.
