“Mussel reefs can protect our coast” (VIDEO)

Could reefs of mussels make a difference in the North Sea?  It’s a question that has taxed scientists for many years. For the past six years scientists have been carrying out tests to find out whether mussel reefs can help to retain sand.  A mussel reef has been constructed two kilometres off the seaside resort of De Panne.  The scientists have come to a clear conclusion: a reef like that can help to retain sand and ensure it is not swept away during heavy storms.  In this way the coastline is better protected and disasters caused by flooding can be averted.
