First rain in a long time and a couple of accidents: traffic jams galore this morning

The morning rush hour was quite a nerve-challenging experience for many motorists today. Tailbacks totalled about 400 kilometres at 8 a.m., making it the heaviest morning rush hour in months. The cause: rain and a number of road accidents.

Most problems were seen on the E17 Motorway between Ghent and Antwerp. Last night, a lorry crashed when using a slip road in Lokeren.

A huge crane had to come to the spot to remove the vehicle, which meant that 2 of the 3 lanes for Antwerp-bound traffic were closed in the morning rush hour. This triggered huge traffic jams on the E17, but also in the wide area as motorists tried to find an alternative. The R4 between Ghent and Zelzate and the E34 west of Antwerp also had long waiting times.

Other traffic accidents produced on the R4, the Ghent Orbital Road, in Vinderhoute. Apart from a number of road accidents, the first rain in weeks also contributed to longer waiting times.
