Police Chief Inspector accused of raping female colleagues

The Brussels Labour Prosecutor has opened an investigation into a 31-year-old Chief Inspector of Police with the Brussels West Local Police Service. The man is accused of having sexually assaulted a dozen young female police officers, some of whom he allegedly also raped. The Brussels Labour Audit Office has confirmed that a criminal investigation is under way but will make no further comment.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place both at the man’s home in Verviers (Liège Province) and at a Brussels police station. Many colleagues in the police service knew about the man’s preference for dominant sex. The women involved initially did not dare to speak out for fear of their jobs. The ball only started rolling when two young women made a statement.

In early September the man was led away from his desk by detectives from the General Inspectorate of Police. He was detained and taken to his home in the Verviers area of Liège Province. The man’s home was searched.

Sick leave

When the first two complaints were made against the Chief Inspector it was still unclear as to the extent of his alleged wrongdoing. He was transferred to another police station.

After his home was searched, the man called in sick and has not returned to work since. His lawyer told the daily ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ that the man does not wish to comment for the time being.

The chief inspector has not been formally arrested nor has he been suspended. The Brussels-West Local Police Service does however confirm that in addition to the criminal investigation, it has launched its own internal investigation into the allegations made against the Chief Inspector.
