Cannabis discovered in the attic of a church in Turnhout

Police in the town of Turnhout in Antwerp Province have detained two men after cannabis was found in the attic of a church. The branches of around 200 cannabis plants were found hanging out to dry in the place of worship's attic.

On 27 September the Chairman of the Church Board found the plants and informed the police. Last Thursday evening at around 10:45pm the police received a second call stating that a suspect had been noticed at the church. With the help of the Fire Service police officers were able to enter the church via the roof and access the place where the cannabis plant branches were drying in the attic.

They were soon able to detain a suspect. The police searched the attic and found a second suspect hiding behind a wall. It would appear that the two men had been able to enter the attic of the church by climbing up the exterior of the building.

The two suspects are aged 29 and 30. They are both from Turnhout. They are suspected of forming a gang and growing narcotics. They have both been questioned and formally arrested by an examining magistrate. One of the suspects has been remanded in custody, the other has been electronically tagged. They will appear before magistrates on Tuesday. Neither suspect has any link to the church nor to the Church Board.
