A detainee has escaped while in transit between a prison and a secure centre for illegal immigrants. The detainee made their escape on the E19 motorway, near Mechelen in Antwerp Province. The person that escaped was being transported from the prison Marche-en-Famenne in Luxembourg Province to a secure centre for illegal immigrants at Merksplas in Antwerp Province.

A large scale search operation was launched on Friday afternoon after an illegal immigrant that was being transported between two secure detention facilities escaped.
The detainee made their escaped on the E19, near Mechelen. They were on their way from Marche-en-Famenne Prison in Luxembourg Province to the secure facility for illegal immigrants at Merksplas in Antwerp Province.
In a statement the Federal Police Service Spokeswoman An Berger said that "It concerns a person who is staying illegally in our country. The local and federal police services have deployed".
