Passenger at Brussels Airport reports steak knife in restaurant to Aviation Ombusman

A passenger at Brussels Airport in Zaventem (Flemish Brabant) was shocked to discover that the Italian restaurant in the airport’s Neutral Zone (the area passengers enter after having passed through security checks) was providing its customers with metal steak knives. The passenger was so concerned that they reported it to the Aviation Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman Philippe Touwaide describes the use of metal steak knives at the AMO restaurant within Zaventem Airport’s Neutral Zone “surprising” and says that this is the second time that he has had to intervene regarding the issue of the use of knives at the restaurant.

The Italian restaurant is located beyond the passenger and luggage checkpoints. "The use of these kinds of knives, that someone with ill-intent could take on board a plane with them, forms a potential risk to aviation security”, the Ombudsman says in a statement.

Brussels Airport says that the knife was not a steak knife, but rather a blunt knife used for spreading. In a statement the airport said that "These knives don’t fall under the description of ‘items with a sharp point or a sharp edge that can cause serious *injury’ as stated in law.

The airport adds that "As such their use is compliant with the law."
