5.5 out of 10 is the score that Belgians give the federal, regional and language community authorities for the way in which they dealt with the coronavirus pandemic here. Researchers from Leuven University (KU Leuven) and the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain) calculated this based on data from the European Social Survey. With a satisfaction rating of 5.5 Belgium ranks 8th out of 28 European countries that took part in the European Social Survey.
Majority of Belgians satisfied with the way the authorities here dealt with the coronavirus pandemic
The European Social Survey asked people in the 28 European countries how satisfied they were about the authorities’ handling of the pandemic. Measures in the fields of economic support, support for families with children, policy towards the elderly in residential care centers, etc were examined by the Survey.
The factors that can influence a person’s level of satisfaction were also looked into. A random sample of than 1,300 Belgians gave their opinion about the federal, regional and language community governments' COVID-19 policies.
At 6.9 out of 10 satisfaction with our health care system scores highest in Belgium. The great pressure on healthcare providers and high mortality rates in residential care homes produced the lowest satisfaction score of just 4.7 out of 10. Flemish people are slightly more satisfied with the policy than Walloons. The average satisfaction score across all the areas examined in the survey was 5.5. This puts Belgium just below The Netherlands (5.6) and above Germany (5.1).The highest satisfaction rating (6.7 out of 10) is to be found in Iceland and Norway. Bulgaria and Poland end up at the bottom of the pile with an average score of lower than 4.
"It is often a recurring pattern: the Scandinavian countries are at the top, the Eastern and Southern European countries at the bottom" , the Leuven University sociology professor Bart Meuleman told VRT News.
Speaking about Belgium’s score ¨Professor Meuleman said. "This score is not that bad. The result is also decent compared to our neighboring countries and other European countries".
