Management at the supermarket chain Delhaize has announced that franchisees have been found for a further 19 of its stores. The announcement brings the number of supermarkets for whom a franchisee has been found to 51. In March Delhaize announced that it was to franchise out all the 128 supermarkets that it still runs in house. The announcement has been met by strike action by staff at the Delhaize stores in Jette (Brussels) and Montigny in Wallonia.
Franchisees found for a further 19 Delhaize stores, staff at three supermarkets down tools
In its press statement Delhaize said 9 of the franchisees already have a franchise to run at least one Delhaize store. 5 of the new franchisees are former Delhaize staff and the remaining 5 are new to running or working at a Delhaize store. Delhaize says that it will make further announcements regarding the franchising out of its stores during the coming months.
The stores for which franchisees have now been found are Ekeren, Boechout, Geel (all Antwerp Province), Blankenberge (West Flanders), Wondelgem, Ghent-Watersport, Aalst, Oudenaarde (all East Flanders), Alsemberg, Kraainem, Wezenbeek (all Flemish Brabant), Jette Théodor, Jette Ch. Woeste, Elsene-Molière (all Brussels), Ottignies, Louvain-la-Neuve, Sambreville Montigny and Liège-Burenville (all Wallonia).
The news has been met with strike action at two of the stores. Staff at the Delhaize supermarket on the Léon Théodorestraat in Jette (Brussels) have downed tools. Staff at the other Delhaize store Jette and the supermarket at Montigny in Hainaut Province also walked out, but have since returned to work.
