Judicial Authorities open investigation into allegations of transgression behaviour by Dean at Antwerp University

The Antwerp Judicial Authorities have opened an investigation after allegations of transgressive behaviour of a sexual nature were made against the Dean of the Medicine Faculty at Antwerp University. As we reported earlier the university had already opened its own disciplinary investigation and suspended the man against whom the allegations were made for 6 months.

At the end of June a female student made a complaint against the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine to the university’s student counselling service. The complaint concerned sexually transgressive behaviour on the part of the Dean.

An internal disciplinary investigation was launched and the Dean was suspended from his duties both at the university and at Antwerp University Hospital. The daily ‘Gazet Van Antwerpen’ writes that there have long been rumours about transgressive behaviour by the Dean. Based on the results of its internal investigation, the University of Antwerp will decide what, if any, further action will be taken against the Dean.

Although they have received no formal complaint, the Antwerp Judicial Authorities have decided to open an investigation into the case.

The alleged victim’s solicitor Walter Damen told VRT News that “In order to preserve the anonymity of my client we decided to first report what happened to the university so that they could investigate internally. But we will of course cooperate fully with the Judicial Authorities’ investigation”.
