First year students studying medicine or dentistry at Ghent University will be obliged to follow lessons via remote learning one day a week. The decision was taken because the university hospital’s largest auditorium can’t accommodate the 620 students who have registered for these disciplines in Ghent.

The number of students embarking on medicine and dentistry studies is limited in Belgium, but last year the quotas were increased. In all 1,600 students were admitted this year. For Ghent alone the figure is 620 and their number can’t be accommodated in the university hospital's largest auditorium.
“We created 450 places by adding extra chairs, but that isn’t enough to accommodate 620 students. It was an incredible puzzle but we have managed to organise it in a way that allows students to attend campus 4 days out of 5” says faculty dean Dr Piet Hoebeke.
At one point the faculty toyed with the idea of demolishing the wall between two auditoriums, but that idea has now been shelved.
