Suspect arrested in connection with arson attack on Antwerp Delhaize store
At around 8am last Thursday several shopping trollies were set on fire at the entrance of a Delhaize supermarket in the Zuid area of Antwerp. No one was injured in the fire, but there was a lot of material damage.
After analysing CCTV footage, the police were able to identify a suspicious vehicle. The license plate of the vehicle led detectives to a 43-year-old man from Brussels. He was arrested last Friday and appeared before an Examining Magistrate. The Examining Magistrate felt that there was enough evidence to arrest the man.
The suspect will appear before magistrates tomorrow (Wednesday 27 September) where a decision will be taken on whether he will remain in custody.
As yet nothing is known about a possible motive. The attack could be related to the long-running dispute at Delhaize. For more than 6 months now the unions that represent staff at Delhaize have been taking action against the supermarket chain’s plans to franchise out 128 stores that it currently runs in house.
