The Flemish Government’s budget talks are under way

It will be a weekend of intense negotiations for the ministers in the Flemish government as talks get under way on the 2024 budget. Ministers will examine what funds can and should be made available for next year and where savings can and must be made. The Flemish Budget Minister Matthias Diependaele (nationalist) is a firm believer in budgetary prudence. Mr Diependaele wants Flanders to be back to having a balanced budget again by 2027.

Each of the three coalition partners has their own wish list. The Christian Democratics want to invest an additional 330 million euro in child care, while the liberals want to free up more resources in order to create jobs and so that more people that are in work enjoy higher a net income.

The coalition partners have to come to an agreement this weekend as the September Declaration during which the budget measures are announced is due to take place on Monday. Last year, the declaration had to be postponed several times as the coalition partners were unable to reach an agreement on time.
