By Tuesday 19 September the Flemish Red Cross had raised 500,000 euro for the relief effort in Morocco. This figure includes money donated by individuals and money given to the organisation by the Flemish Government.

The Flemish Red Cross’ International Cooperation Manager Sofie De Jaeger told journalists that “The situation on the ground in Morocco is still precarious. The earthquake has already claimed more than 3,000 lives and thousands of other people have been injured. The material damage is also extensive, making the impact on housing, especially in the hardest-hit areas, enormous. Moreover, in the coming weeks there is also a risk of a cold wave in the Atlas Mountains, which makes the situation even more worrying for the victims."

The money will be passed on to the German Red Cross, which has been active in Morocco for some time and is now also assisting the Moroccan Red Crescent in their humanitarian relief efforts. It will be used for shelter, clean drinking water, food and hygiene items, as well as medical assistance and psychological support. In addition, the Flemish Red Cross is also sending an experienced staff member to Morocco to coordinate the relief effort.
